Essentially, batteries are used under two types of conditions:
1. Cyclic applications, such as electric vehicle and camera equipment - generally portable gear.
2. Standby applications on industrial or access control equipment, which are intended to supply a load immediately, should its normal supply be interrupted, such as standby generators, fire alarm systems, repeater stations.
The size of charger required depends on a combination of the desired recharge time and the size of the batteries being used.
Boost charging is normally used for the fast recharge of batteries used in cyclic applications and may be used for equalization in higher voltage (110V) systems. Our SmartChargers are not suitable for connection in situations where there is a standing load, in which case either our No-Break™ DC power supply or Standard charger should be used.
What is a SmartCharger and what are the benefits?
- Battery life, recharge time and capacity are critical (and costly!) parameters that should be maximised by battery chargers, especially in 'cyclic' use applications.
- Our SmartChargers are fully automatic to provide battery recovery in the shortest practicable time.
- To maximise life and capacity, the charger must be able to control the charging parameters accurately.
- Typical constant voltage chargers take a much longer time to return the battery to a fully charged state.
- All our SmartChargers have temperature compensation to ensure that the correct voltage is applied to the battery no matter what the ambient temperature is. Ideally the temperature sensor should be placed on the battery or as close to the battery as practical.
- SmartChargers are designed to charge both sealed and flooded lead-acid battery types.
Our No-Break DC™ system is a very sophisticated control system with a numerous protection and alarm options.
For simple ‘float charging' the Standard DC Power Supply is used with or without optional temperature compensation and alarms.
